Michael Pearce began his career at the Corner Kitchen in the summer of 2008, right after high school graduation. Michael had a connection with the restaurant since his brother John had been hired as a Busser at Corner Kitchen shortly after reopening due to the famous flood in 2004. Michael came on as a Busser and worked his way through the ranks to Host, Server, and now a full time Manager. Michael recently got engaged to his boyfriend Johnny, who is also part of the Corner Kitchen family.
On working for the Corner Kitchen
I’ve always felt very lucky and honored to be with one of the top restaurants in Asheville. I remember my first night hosting, I royally messed up. I was quoting 30-minute wait times, when it should have been more like an hour to 90 minutes. The manager was not really happy with me, but I learned quickly from that mistake.
On a very memorable moment with a guest;
Getting to shake Obama’s hand was nice. I kinda snuck in to the restaurant as one of Joe’s kids to do that. I didn’t get to talk to him, but I did get to shake his hand.
On working his way up from Busser to Manager;
I have risen through the ranks, and seen how the restaurant has grown up. I remember the village before the Bohemian and some of the other expansions. Having lived in Asheville all my life and I have seen how the city as a whole has changed over time. This next step has me excited. I am new to managing, so I am excited about learning and progressing and doing a good job.
Michael can be found working the evening service most nights at the restaurant. When he is not at work he enjoys checking out the food scene around town, crossword puzzles, a good glass of wine, and game nights with friends.
