July & August’s recipient is Mama Maisha
“Dr. Reta Graham and Dr. Jeff Graham from Asheville co-founded Mama Maisha, a Safe Motherhood Intervention Project in the Mara region of Tanzania. Mama Maisha connects their Asheville community with their African community, working at the village level in Tanzania to train local women as Maternal Health Advocates and provide essential health education and resources to communities in need.Mama Maisha empowers women to make wise decisions regarding family planning, healthy pregnancy, and safe delivery for every child. Through women’s groups and individual support, Mama Maisha improves access to prenatal care and skilled delivery. Mama Maisha develops collaborative relationships with local and regional stakeholders to advocate for education, training and retention of health providers at a variety of levels, improving standards and addressing the unmet need for reproductive and maternal health care.” – Dr. Reta Graham
